The former Scottish cathedral city of Elgin, in the Royal Burgh of Morayshire, stands on the River Lossie. It was created a Royal Burgh as early as the 12th century by King David of Scotland and had a castle in those days. It was in the latter part of the 19th century that races were held in Elgin, the first being in 1886. The second and final meeting took place on Wednesday 13th April 1887.
